Hello, quick question - will the workshop videos continue to be available after the workshop concludes? I would really like to be able to come back and revisit these topics, especially after having the tutorials. Thank you!
*Thread Reply:* Yes, the videos will be available after the course. We'll also make the files related to the practicals availble.
*Thread Reply:* Wonderful, thank you. I've been going through them and they are excellent, and I was hoping to have the chance to come back to them afterwards to pick out some of the finer details after having the tutorials. Glad they will continue to be available!
*Thread Reply:* Hi @Jeff Lessem (he/him), for how long will we be able to access the workshop cluster (eg continue working on practicals in R Studio) after the workshop ends? Just wondering if we should be saving all these practical files somewhere else other than our workshop home directories. Thanks, Kristen H
*Thread Reply:* Everything in your workshop home directory will be available for download after the workshop, so you'll be able to download everything as one big zip file.
The cluster probably won't stay online for very long past the end of the workshop, mostly because it's in IBG's seminar room, and CU has moved back to (optional) in-person work, so the room will probably be needed at some point.
Hello! How do we find the intro to R script and data files for the "Find, Open, Review Files in R" tutorial? Thank you!
*Thread Reply:* They should be /faculty/elizabeth/2021
if you are looking for the BMX2018.csv demo2018.csv IntroToR2021.R
files.
Do you need help in how to open them?
*Thread Reply:* That would be great! Do I download scripts and datasets within RStudio?
*Thread Reply:* You will open the files within RStudio. There are a few ways to do it, whichever is easiest for you.
From within RStudio, the lower left frame should have several tabs. Go to the "Files" tab, which it may already be on.
Below the tabs line, should be a line that starts with "New folder" and below that one that has "Home". On the far right of the left line should be a square with ...
. Click on that.
It should bring up a dialog box that says "Path to folder". Type in /faculty/elizabeth
Then it should show you Elizabeth's directory.
You can click to navigate into 2021/Opening Files in R
If you then click on the IntroToR2021.R
file it should open in the top left frame.
*Thread Reply:* Great! Thank you very much!
*Thread Reply:* If you want to save the R file, click on the RStudio "File" menu and select "Save As" It will try to save in Liz's directory, which won't work. The easiest way to get it to save in your own home directory is to look for the square with the ...
near the top of the save dialog box. That will open the same "Path to folder" dialog box from before. Just type a ~
into it, and it will go back to showing your home directory. You can then save the R script.
There are easier ways to copy files, but this way works pretty well to open and view an R script.
The script is written to open the data files from Liz's home directory, so that shouldn't be a problem.
*Thread Reply:* That's very helpful. Thank you!
Hi, just wondering. I selected both sessions as options as I could join either of them. I just realized I only have the zoom link to session B, but not sure if I can only attend session B at all times. Just some days would be a bit better to do session A instead of B.
*Thread Reply:* For now, we're asking people to stay with their session, because we only have the resources to cover a limited amount of students in each session, and A is much more popular than B. If as the week progresses we see a dropoff in attendance, then we will probably loosen the restriction.
Is it possible to get a transcript of the videos?
*Thread Reply:* It should be available as the machine generated subtitles for the recording. I'm not sure how soon or in exactly what form that will be available.
*Thread Reply:* I think for Youtube videos there is an "Open transcription box" or similar option somewhere, but they are broken down by timestamp
*Thread Reply:* The transcript box isn't present on the phone version of YouTube. It would be a bit more accessible if there was a text document with the transcription. Is that possible for next week?
*Thread Reply:* It should be. I've already got all of the subtitles pulled out of youtube. The big thing is that all of them started as autogenerated, but some have been lightly edited, some heavily edited, and some not edited at all.
*Thread Reply:* The subtitle files are all in /home/jeff/workshop/21/YouTube
and are the .vtt
files. Is that adequate, or should I make them available someplace else?
*Thread Reply:* That should work.
*Thread Reply:* Sorry, I thought that was in the faculty location. You're home directory will be restricted to you and those with admin permissions. Can you place it some place outside of your home directory.
*Thread Reply:* Oops, I should have checked the permissions. You can find them in /faculty/jeff/YouTube
. Unfortunately (and a window into what I was dealing with getting things put together) the videos often have a different name than the lecture title. Their names are just whatever the person who made the video happened to save it as. Let me know if you have trouble sorting it out.
I might not be able to attend today's practical. Can I still do the practical at a later time via the link? Or is there another way that I can do the practical by myself? Thanks!
*Thread Reply:* That is probably best answered by @Sarah Medland (she/her).
*Thread Reply:* The link will work, so you can go to https://qimr.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_57iJKVtD3y0fQns anytime to do the practical
Hi, how long would we have access to the workshop server and Rstudio server for?
