Setting IBG as your CU mailhome

mailhome refers to where your CU email is delivered. It might be delivered to CU's Exchange server, to IBG's mailserver, to another mailserver on campus, or even to an external entity, such as gmail. Where email is delivered is a personal decision, and everyone should pick the location that works best for each person's needs.

Advantages and disadvantages

IBG email delivery

Advantages

  • Jeff Lessem and Sean Shelby can help you with email issues.
  • Compatible with all compliant IMAP aware applications, such as Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook, and most mobile phones, including iPhone and Android.

Disadvantages

CU's Exchange Server email delivery

Advantages

  • Exchange has many advanced features, including calendering, global address books, and easy setup for Microsoft Outlook and some mobile devices which support the ActiveSync protocol.
  • Exchange offers an advanced web client, which is more sophisticated than Squirrelmail.
  • 50GB quota, which is similar to what is available at IBG, but greatly exceeds previous offerings from CU.

Disadvantages

Discovering where your email goes

  • Connect to the CU Identity Manager website at https://cuidm.colorado.edu. Right click, or whatever other action is required to open that link in a new window, so that you can continue to follow these instructions while you are logged in to the identity manager.
  • Login to the CU Identity Manager using your CU identikey. If you do not know your identikey username or password, follow the links on that page to get your identikey, or to change the password.
  • Once logged in, click on the Manage My E-Mail Addresses link.
  • Your current mailhome, where your email is delivered, is on the line labeled Current E-mail Delivery Location . If it says <username>@delta.colorado.edu then your email is coming to IBG. If it says anything else, then your email is going elsewhere.

Setting IBG as your mailhome

Setting IBG as your CU mailhome is a multi-step process that is done at the CU Identity Manager website. This process is not actually complicated, just tedious.

  • For every email address in the Non-Editable E-mail Alternate Addresses section, there must be a corresponding entry in the Removable E-mail Alternate Addresses field for both @delta.colorado.edu and @ibg.colorado.edu.
    • On the Add an E-mail Address line, select the left part of your email address from the first –Select– menu. There should be entries for your identikey username, and for your First.Lastname.
    • Select delta.colorado.edu from the right –Select– menu.
    • Then click the Add button, and the email address should appear in the Removable E-mail Alternate Addresses field.
    • Use the left –Select– menu to pick the same entry you just used, but in the right –Select– menu choose ibg.colorado.edu, and then click Add
    • Then move to the next entry in the left –Select– menu, and repeat the steps with delta.colorado.edu and ibg.colorado.edu from the right –Select– menu.
  • Now move to the two fields below the Warning box.
  • Enter into the New E-mail Delivery Location field your identikey-username@delta.colorado.edu, for example, if your identikey is abcd1234, then enter abcd1234@delta.colorado.edu
  • Enter the same address again into the Confirm New E-mail Delivery Location field
  • Now, go back to the top of the page and choose a value from the Campus Published E-mail Address menu. The standard recommendation is to choose your first.last@Colorado.EDU address. This e-mail address is displayed in a search of the campus directory (a “white pages” search). As with any directory information, this address will not be displayed for user accounts that have been privacy-enabled.
  • Choose a value from the Outgoing E-mail Address menu. Your outbound E-mail address will display this address on the “From:” line, along with your display name.
  • Click Save at the bottom of the page.
  • If successful, you will be taken to a page saying Operation Successful.
  • If there is a problem, an error box on the page will explain the issue.
