Lab Shyness Coding at 14 Months

Description of Test: This test assesses the child's reaction to the examiners and their equipment in the first five minutes of the lab visit. To see the description of the Entry Procedure from the MALTS procedure document, move there.  To see the form on which the data was recorded, click to see form.

Variable Names:  Variable names from this database have the prefix V1LSHY. The data set has 681 test subjects and 54 variables. Forty-two of these subjects have no data attached to the test subject entry. Data were collected by viewing video tapes of the lab visit of 14 month old twins. The variables include: Coder ID, Latency to First Approaching Stranger across all 5 minutes, a Hesitation Rating, 7 scores for each of the 5 minutes (Approach/Talk, Plays with Lab Toy, Proximity to Mother, Clings to Mother, Self-soothing Behavior, Vocalizes, Cries), 10 composite scores and a comment field. Move there to move to the complete list of variable names from this database.

Cleaning:  The data have been examined to ensure that the values of the variables are within range. If V1LSHY1 (Latency to first approaching stranger across all 5 minutes) was greater than 300 seconds, then the first composite variable, V1LSHLAT (Latency to approach stranger) was set at 300.

Composites:  There are 10 composite variables: V1LSHLAT, V1LSHY43, V1LSHY44, V1LSHY45, V1LSHY46, V1LSHY47, V1LSHY48, V1LSHY49, V1LSHY50, and V1LSHYPC.

V1LSHLAT:
This has the same value as V1LSHY1 (Latency to first approaching stranger across all 5 minutes) if the value was 300 seconds or less. If V1LSHY1 had a value greater than 300 seconds, or was coded as 999 (missing latency score, but data available), then V1LSHLAT was set to 300. If there are no data other than the coder ID, then V1LSHLAT is recorded as .' (missing).

V1LSHY43:
This is an Average Approach/Talk score. It is the mean of the 5 Approach/Talk scores V1LSHY3, V1LSHY11, V1LSHY19, V1LSHY27, and V1LSHY35. Up to 4 of the 5 scores could be missing, since the protocol does not require more than one episode.

V1LSHY44:
This is an Average Shyness Rating. It is the mean of the 5 Shyness ratings V1LSHY10, V1LSHY18, V1LSHY26, V1LSHY34, V1LSHY42. Up to 3 of the 5 scores could be missing.

V1LSHY45:
This is the calculated number of episodes of Plays with Lab Toy. It is 5 times the mean of the individual scores V1LSHY4, V1LSHY12, V1LSHY20, V1LSHY28, and V1LSHY36. Up to 3 of the 5 scores could be missing.

V1LSHY46:
This is the calculated number of episodes of Proximity to Mother. It is 5 times the mean of the individual scores V1LSHY5, V1LSHY13, V1LSHY21, V1LSHY29, and V1LSHY37. Up to 3 of the 5 scores could be missing.

V1LSHY47:
This is the calculated number of episodes of Clings to Mother. It is 5 times the mean of the individual scores V1LSHY6, V1LSHY14, V1LSHY22, V1LSHY30, and V1LSHY38. Up to 3 of the 5 scores could be missing.

V1LSHY48:
This is the calculated number of episodes of Self-soothing Behavior. It is 5 times the mean of the individual scores V1LSHY7, V1LSHY15, V1LSHY23, V1LSHY31, and V1LSHY39. Up to 3 of the 5 scores could be missing.

V1LSHY49:
This is the calculated number of episodes of Vocalizations. It is 5 times the mean of the individual scores V1LSHY8, V1LSHY16, V1LSHY24, V1LSHY32, and V1LSHY40. Up to 3 of the 5 scores could be missing.

V1LSHY50:
This is the calculated number of episodes of Crying. It is 5 times the mean of the individual scores V1LSHY9, V1LSHY17, V1LSHY25, V1LSHY33, and V1LSHY41. Up to 3 of the 5 scores could be missing.

V1LSHYPC:
This is the loading on the first principal component from a factor analysis of the z scores of V1LSHLAT, V1LSHY2, and V1LSHY43-V1LSHY50.

Procedure Description:

Reception Room

Ideally, two weeks following the home visit at 14,20,24,and 36 months of age each mother brought her twins to the Institute For Behavioral Genetics in Boulder for a laboratory visit. Each visit began in the same manner as the home visit with an assessment of the children's shyness. During a five minute warm-up period the children were videotaped as they ventured forth from their mothers to explore their new environment. During this time the examiner gave each mother a consent form to read, sign, and date and discussed the various lab procedures. The examiner did not engage the children in any manner during these first five minutes unless approached by one of the children.
