This chapter provides an overview of current research and trends in using contingency management as a treatment for drug dependence. Contingency management is a means to influence behavior through a system of rewards and punishments. Precision in reinforcement is necessary in treating drug dependence because relapse is influenced by complex consequences – only a few of which are controlled by therapists. Effective contingency management requires that differences in behavior also be approached with different strategies. Further research is needed to develop more precise schedules and consequences, to clarify interactions with other treatments, to use "natural' consequences available in patients' environments, to uncover reasons for non-response, and to conduct multicenter trials of contingency management treatments.
